HISTORY
"From Early Pioneer Home to Rustic Restaurant"
The Ole Lamplighter Inn was originally constructed in the early 1800's on Fry Branch Road in Giles County. It was a two-story private residence which provided warmth and shelter to several generations of early Tennessee Pioneers.
In the early 1930's, the late Mrs. W. S. Fleming had the logs moved to it's present location. She used it as her private residence while she operated the Rock Rest, a suburban hotel on Riverside Drive. During this era, and thru the 1950's, Riverside Drive was the main road from Columbia to Nashville.
Sometime later, Mrs. Liza Gray operated The Gypsy Tavern out of the building. Then it was turned into The Sportsman's Store complete with three live bait ponds in the front. In 1948 the original Pickwick Restaurant burned. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Smith moved to the hunting and fishing supply store to reopen it as The Pickwick Restaurant. After several owners The Pickwick burned in 1961.
Judge Jimmy Matthews and his partner Mr. John Stockard had it renovated complete with the removal of the second story. Judge Jimmy Matthews reopened it and gave it the name "The Ole Lamplighter Inn".
In 1980, John and Brenda Kirtley returned to their hometown after being away for 20 years. They had been operating restaurants in the Chattanooga and Nashville areas. They purchased The Lamplighter and made changes in the operation and menu. It is our one and only goal to maintain the best restaurant in the Maury County area.
